Compare the Harris and Trump Housing Platforms
|
“Make rent more affordable and homeownership more attainable” is the second goal listed in Vice President Harris’s policy platform. She proposes building three million new housing units for rent and purchase, providing $25,000 in down payment assistance for first-time homebuyers, cutting red tape to build more housing faster, penalizing firms that hoard available homes to drive up prices, and outlawing price fixing by corporate landlords.
Former President Trump’s platform offers less detail on his housing plans. He says Republicans will reduce mortgage rates by slashing inflation, open limited portions of federal lands to allow for new home construction, provide tax incentives for first-time buyers, and cut regulations that raise housing costs.

GOP Housing Plan Takes Shape
|
Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) introduced a sweeping affordable housing bill on October 18. It includes measures that would create a pilot program to use federal property for affordable housing development, expand the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit, expand housing discounts for first responders, and roll back clean energy requirements on new homes. The proposal provides a window into the housing policy battles to come in the next session of Congress.
